Pilgrimage of the Virgin of the Cabeza: Location Analytics for Managing Mass Events

Challenge: optimizing service management in a crowded environment

Precise location analytics for events with a high concentration of people over several days

The Romería de la Virgen de la Cabeza, held in the Sierra de Andújar Natural Park (Jaén), is one of Spain’s most emblematic religious celebrations. Each year, over an entire weekend, it attracts more than 500,000 people, making it one of the largest gatherings in the country.

To enhance the management of public services, safety, and emergency response during the pilgrimage, the challenge is to monitor attendance and the flow of people at key locations throughout these days.

Key devices and technology to achieve the desired results

We installed a series of access points with our CHT (Cognitive Hotspot Technology) and Location & Presence Analytics technology in the vicinity of the basilica itself, inside it, as well as at its main entrances.

In this way, we would be able to understand with the greatest possible reliability the real-time behavior of pilgrims and visitors who came on foot, on horseback or in carts to the sanctuary throughout the 3 days.

We achieved these results with maximum precision thanks to our AI algorithms, which make it possible to identify and track devices without them needing to be connected to the Wi-Fi network, even if they randomize their MAC addresses and without the user having to intervene. All this while always respecting the user’s privacy.

Results achieved

The most relevant data provided to the authorities by the Galgus technology

Throughout the Pilgrimage we collected data that we graphically represented in resources such as heat maps.

In this way, we were able to make a real-time count of unique users in the different areas. In addition, based on the time spent there, we were able to segment between passers-by, visitors and long-term stays.

It was also very valuable to know the main movements that took place, tracing the journey of the users and creating the origin-destination matrices.

With all this data, we facilitated the work of the authorities and organizers, optimizing their decision-making, making it more accurate and shortening response times.
